Facts about depression
Do you know, that:
- Twice as many women as men suffer from major depression
- Approximately 20% of women will experience depression in their lifetime
- Women are twice as likely as men to have post-traumatic stress disorder during their lifetime
- Approximately 10% to 15% of new mothers will develop major depression following childbirth and those
women have a 50% risk of developing major depression again during future pregnancies
Because depression affects so many women, it is important that all women understand the risk factors
for depression.
- There are many physical, mental, and social risk factors for depression in women, including:
- Family or personal history of depression
- Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one, separation, or divorce
- Lack of a social support system
Depression is a common medical condition and it can be treated.
- Early intervention and effective therapy may restore emotional function and well-being and reduce the
likelihood of recurrence
There are several possible explanations of this phenomenon:
- Some mental health professionals believe that women are at a greater risk of developing a depressive
disorder or other mental illness than men are. This explanation suggests that women should especially
carefully monitor their mental conditions.
- Other psychiatrists believe that due to the fact that women better verbalize their feelings they seek
professional help and complain about their problems more often than men do. This explanation suggests
that men should pay more attention to their mental health and should not be afraid to talk about their
negative feelings.
