Family Caregivers
Support Group for Family Caregivers
Traditionally, family is defined as blood related and/or immediate family. Family can also be defined as
close friends, extended family or those with frequent contacts with an individual with an illness. Some
caregivers are faced with emotional, mental and physical responsibilities. The family caregiver is at times
faced with stress and burnout when expectations of a caregiver role may become overwhelming. An
individual with mental and physical illness/ailments can have an emotional, psychological and financial
impact on the family.
The Support Group for Family Caregivers is to help who are responsible as a caregiver to a loved one or
individual with an illness. Family Caregiver Support group will also help provide the caregiver to talk about
their experiences with other group members who can also share their experiences as a caregiver
themselves.
Christina Ortiz, MSW, LCSW, ACSW will also provide family psycho education to family caregiver stress.
Goals of family psycho education are to decrease caregiver stress, enhancing communication skills and
to identify stressors that relate to the caregiver.
Other areas that are focused in the Family Caregivers Support Group:
- education and understanding about an illness and diagnosis
- learning new coping skills
